Caramelized Pork Belly with Chinese Five Spices is a mouthwatering dish that combines the rich, fatty texture of pork belly with the aromatic blend of Chinese five-spice powder. The pork belly is slowly braised until tender, then caramelized with a mixture of sugar, soy sauce, and spices including star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds. This process creates a beautifully glazed, flavorful crust on the pork. The result is a dish with a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spicy notes, making it a delightful main course that's sure to impress. Serve it with steamed rice and sautéed vegetables for a complete and satisfying meal.
Cut the pork belly into thick slices and then into large lardon-sized pieces.
Preheat the oven to 356°F (Gas mark 6). Brown the meat on all sides in a large pot with peanut oil. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes. Drain them.
Transfer the meat to an ovenproof dish. Whisk the soy sauce with sesame oil, honey, and Chinese five-spice. Pour over the meat and mix well to coat.
Bake for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent the meat from sticking. Add the potatoes after 30 minutes and mix them with the meat and sauce.
Dissolve the miso bouillon cube in a saucepan with 1.7 cups hot water. Divide the miso broth among 4 bowls.
Add caramelized pork and potatoes to the bowls. Sprinkle with cilantro leaves and sesame seeds.
